Green, green, green …

This past Saturday night many of us celebrated Earth Hour by turning out our lights for one hour. I want to congratulate and thank everyone who participated by taking the extra steps that night. You demonstrated your commitment to the fight against climate change.

Being “green” isn’t always the easiest thing. But it’s important for our environment, our home. I remember years ago when green initiatives weren’t as prevalent – thank goodness that has changed. I’m glad we live in a community where there are litter cleanups and extra efforts to recycle.

Speaking of litter cleanups, April is a busy month! On April 20, all you need is 20 minutes. Yes, that’s right, 20 minutes can make a difference. The City of Waterloo has participated in the annual 20 Minute Makeover for years. To join in, just set aside 20 minutes at 2 p.m. to clean up litter around your office, school or neighbourhood. That’s all it takes!

We’re the ones with the power to make a difference in our environment, our home. Let’s make the difference a good one. I encourage you to check out our website for more ideas and details on getting involved in the community this month.

I hope you enjoyed my first blog. If you have ideas for future blogs, please email them to communications@waterloo.ca. But for now, have a safe and happy long weekend.

  1. Great blog mayor Halloran! The environment is important. Where can a resident go to start up our own neighborhood clean up? I’d like to start one.
